In a recognition that Australia needs more doctors the Federal Government has updated the Skilled Occupations List to include Medical Practitioners, who can claim 60 points if they can obtain a skills assessment classification from a State or Territory Medical Board.
In addition, Medical Practitioners now find themselves on the Migration Occupations in Demand List and are therefore able to claim 10 points if they do not have a job offer, or 15 points if there is an offer of full time employment in Australia as a Medical Practitioner from an employer that has employed at least 10 persons on a full time basis for at least 24 months immediately prior to the lodgement of the skilled visa application.
Medical practitioners applying for a skilled visa will also receive priority processing by the Department of Immigration, which should mean a visa decision in about 3 to 6 months.
The updated Skilled Occupations List is available below.
