As flagged in an earlier news story, Assurances of Support (AoS) have become the responsibility of Centrelink from the 1st of July, 2004. As a result Department of Immigration form 28 has been withdrawn, and need not now be lodged with the visa application documentation for those categories of visa that have a mandatory AoS requirement.
The Assurer for a person who lodges a visa application for a visa category that has a mandatory AoS requirement will now be referred to Centrelink at the appropriate stage in the processing of the visa application. Centrelink will then discuss the obligations under the AoS with the Assurer before arranging the necessary paperwork.
We foresee some initial teething problems with these changes as Centrelink becomes familiar with the process. We also recommend that an intending migrant who plans to lodge an application that requires an AoS should liaise closely with his or her Assurer to ensure that the Assurer has the required level of assessable income - in our experience there is often confusion on the part of Assurers as to what is required in this regard.
