National system of trade licensing on the way ...

A national system of trade licensing is on the way, as reported in today's national paper, The Australian.

For many of those with trade skills occupations securing a skills assessment classification from the assessing body called Trades Recognition Australia for the purpose of their skilled visa application is only the first step in the recognition of their qualifications and work experience - once they have moved to Australia those with certain qualifications (such as electricians and plumbers) can be faced with the further hurdle of having to undergo assessments of their knowledge and competencies under State or Territory legislation before they can commence work.

It is to be hoped that the simplification of present arrangements highlighted in today's The Australian leads to quicker integration and employment of trades skills migrants during the coming year.
