The Australian Computer Society has flagged important changes to the migration skills assessment process for IT professionals who are applying under the Recognition of Prior Learning pathway.
These changes come into effect for RPL skills assessment applications lodged with the Australian Computer Society after 31st January, 2010.
Background
All individuals who have a skilled occupation and who intend to migrate to Australia under the general skilled program (as well as certain other visa classes) are required to obtain a migration skills assessment from the authority that has been delegated the ability to assess the skilled occupation.
Those with IT qualifications and/or work experience are required to submit information to the Australian Computer Society (ACS).
Note also that the ACS is one of the relatively few assessing bodies that will issue a migration skills assessment when the applicant does not have tertiary level qualifications - it does this by allowing applications to be made by individuals who do not have tertiary IT related qualifications, but who do have substantial work experience in the field of IT.
This is known as the Recognition of Prior Learning or RPL pathway.
Changes to the RPL Pathway
At present individuals who lodge an application with the ACS for consideration under the RPL pathway are required to have regard to the ACS's Core Body of Knowledge for Information Technology Professionals.
Individuals who lodge an application with the ACS for assessment under the RPL pathway from the 1st of February, 2010 will need to demonstrate that they have acquired a level of knowledge equivalent to that of a formal tertiary ICT qualification in Australia by addressing as many of the areas referred to in the Key Areas of Knowledge as they consider are covered by their acquired knowledge.
Go Matilda has many years of experience handling skilled visa applications, particularly for individuals with IT qualifications and work experience.
