The new list of occupations that will allow skilled individuals to migrate to Australia has been published - and in fact there are four lists, rather than one!
The lists (see the weblink below) detail the skilled occupations that will allow individuals to migrate to Australia, the points available, and the assessing body that is given the authority to assess the intending migrant's competencies.
For overseas based migrants who have yet to lodge a skilled visa application the key lists are Schedules 3 and 4. Schedule 3 is the list of occupations that allows overseas individuals to consider a general skilled visa pathway, while Schedule 4 is a longer list from which State and Territory Governments can select occupations to appear on their State Migration Plans.
The SMPs are anxiously awaited by many intending migrants at the time of writing this article, as sponsorship under a SMP will be the only pathway for many who wish to migrate to Australia - typically those who:
* Who have an occupation on Schedule 3, but who cannot secure the points needed to apply for a visa under subclass 175 (Skilled Independent), or
* Whose occupation does not appear on Schedule 3, but is on Schedule 4.
